Spotlight: Respite. Retreat. Tonic for the Soul: All That and More at The Ford
Tucked away in the lush landscape just beyond the Savannah city limits, The Ford Field and River Club’s dedication to its Southern roots, appreciation for its natural surroundings and stunning architecture are only a few of the reasons why it's easy for anyone to fall in love with this treasured community. Today, we’re taking a closer look at what makes The Ford the pinnacle of authentic Lowcountry living.
The community’s namesake can be traced back to 1917 when Henry Ford paid a visit and was captivated by the breathtaking surroundings. A decade later, his family bought the land and built the first home on the property, a 6,900-square-foot red brick estate, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains in use. Today, The Ford continues to preserve and honor its rich history while welcoming new generations of families who add to its legacy.
Just as Ford experienced it more than a century ago, the abundant habitat encompassing The Ford remains one of its most alluring features today. From the flourishing wetlands, creeks and ponds to the dense woodlands, the private club is dedicated to preserving all of its surrounding habits with care. That is just one of the many reasons Audubon International awarded the community the Audubon Certification for environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, water conservation and education in 2020.
The Ford’s picturesque environment also makes it the idyllic setting for the countless recreational activities and lifestyle amenities found within the sprawling 1,800 private acres, making adventures easily accessible. Whether members want to play on the club’s award-winning 250-acre golf course or pristine pickleball courts, escape on the many running and hiking trails or pursue activities like fishing, kayaking and waterskiing, The Ford has it all.
And then there’s the stunning architecture. From The Main House and Oyster House, built nearly 100 years ago, to the one-of-a-kind design that comprises the community’s five enclaves and 400 residences, The Ford prides itself on its expansive expression of Southern Style that can be found in regional architectural styles including New Orleans French colonials, Southern manors and Charleston-style garden homes.
The magic of The Ford is experienced in every aspect of this storied sanctuary in the Georgia Lowcountry. To learn more about The Ford File and River Club, check out the community’s website here.
